  1. The Vocabulator (c) is a program which helps you overcome one of
  2. the biggest problems in learning a new language -- the fact that
  3. you have difficulty in learning pronunciation and structure
  4. because you do not know enough VOCABULARY.
  5.  
  6. The Vocabulator (c) helps you overcome this problem by giving
  7. you a "flip card" display of common words and phrases.
  8.  
  9. The Vocabulator (c) uses Industry Standard Menu Selection
  10. and Navigation standards.
  11. The Cursor (arrow) keys will move you around the screens
  12. to edit and view data.
  13. <F1> will invoke relevant help screens.
  14. <Esc> will abort the current operation, and return you to the
  15. previous higher level of the program.

  17. The various Vocabulator (c) options are selected by a "Menu"
  18. of options. You select the option by moving the highlight to
  19. the option you wish to execute, and then press <Enter>.
  20. A quick method of making this selection is also provided -
  21. simply press the first letter of the menu option you wish to
  22. execute, and the option will execute directly.

  24. The various Vocabulator (c) options are described in more
  25. detail below.

  27. THE PROMPTING ROUTINES:
  28.  
  29.     The Vocabulator can prompt with YOUR LANGUAGE WORD, where you
  30.     want to translate into the foreign language, or with the
  31.     FOREIGN LANGUAGE WORD when you want to translate back into
  32.     your own language.
  33.  
  34.     You can speed up, or slow down the prompt speed as your
  35.     proficiency in the language improves. You do this by pressing
  36.     the up and down arrow keys while in the prompting routines.
  37.  
  38.     As you begin to learn more words, you will find that some well
  39.     known words continue to prompt, which tends to waste time,
  40.     and make you feel frustrated. Press <Enter> when such a word
  41.     is displayed in the prompting routines, and the word will be
  42.     removed until you decide to restore it.

  44.     This "hiding" routine is also useful when you have just
  45.     started with the language - you may well find that there are
  46.     so many words that they are not repeated often enough for
  47.     you to learn them quickly. All you then do is press enter
  48.     when the more difficult words are displayed, until you have
  49.     a small enough list of words which you can learn quickly.
  50.     When you have learnt these words well, reinstate the other
  51.     words in order to learn them.

  53.     During prompting, you may often find that you are confused,
  54.     and wish to think about, or look at previous or similar words.
  55.     To do this, press <Space> in the prompting routines, which
  56.     will halt the prompting process. You can then look at the
  57.     previous few words which are still displayed on screen, or
  58.     browse through your vocabulary database by pressing <F1>.

  60. ADD/EDIT WORDS ROUTINE
  61.  
  62.     The Vocabulator (c) is supplied with databases of about 500
  63.     words for a number of common languages. This list has been
  64.     recommended to us as THE MOST USEFUL list for a beginner in
  65.     a language. If you develop your knowledge beyond the scope
  66.     of this list, this routine allows you to add, edit, or
  67.     delete words as you wish.

  69.     You can even generate your own new language database by
  70.     means of this routine as follows:

  72.           Exit to DOS, and log to the Vocabulator Directory
  73.           Type  COPY  BLANK.MAS  <Name of your language>.VOC
  74.           Type  COPY  BLANK.ORD  <Name of your language>.ORD
  75.           Reenter the Vocabulator (c), select your new
  76.           language, and build up a database of the words you
  77.           want to learn.

  79. REINSTATE HIDDEN WORDS
  80.  
  81.     If you have hidden words in the prompt routine, and now
  82.     want them to be returned to the prompting list, execute
  83.     this option to restore them
  84.  
  85. PRINT WORDS
  86.  
  87.     If you want a hard copy of your Vocabulary database, use
  88.     this routine to print the words out.

  90.     You can choose to print out the database alphabetically
  91.     in either your language, or the foreign language.

  93. CORRECT CORRUPTED FILES
  94.  
  95.     In the unlikely event that you find that your data seems
  96.     to be corrupted, and words seem to be missing, or
  97.     duplicated, use this option to attempt to correct these
  98.     problems. NOTE: These problems should normally only
  99.     happen after a power failure while you are editing words.

  101. BACKUP DATA
  102.  
  103.     If you have made modifications to any of your language
  104.     libraries, you will want to make regular backups to floppy
  105.     disks. To do this, make sure you have a formatted disk
  106.     in drive A:, and then execute this option, which will copy
  107.     your selected Language Library to the floppy disk.
